Mark 4:14
The sower sows the word.
Jesus told a story to the crowd, about sowing seeds on
various types of soil, but did not explain its meaning until later when
his disciples asked Him what it meant.
He said, "the sower sows the word. And these are the ones who are
beside the road where the word is sown: and when they hear, immediately
Satan comes and takes away the word which has been sown in them."
The band of birds in the foreground represent the devil who steals the
good news from those who are barren without it. The different kinds
of soil where the word falls represent the hearers who either receive
the word and fall away immediately (rocky soil) or receive it but get
strangled by the things of the world (thorns), or who receive the word
and yield a harvest of souls (good soil).
The image of the sower is taken from a drawing that Van Gogh did from
a Millet painting. (I figured I was in good company.) On the sower's
sleeve is the title text, and the seed that he is throwing is John 3:16,
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only son that whoever
believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life."
